What happened on Monday, 24th June 2024, at the IEO Hospital (European Institute of Oncology)? Quite simply, a different way of communication between doctor and patient was tested.
A two-way communication, with neither language nor specialist barriers and without fear, with the only need to understand and be understood: eliminating any screen between the patient and his treating physicians is a good way to increase disease awareness.
Everything so easy? Absolutely not, many ingredients were indispensable, first and foremost a communion of intentions between different realities: on one side a large oncological structure at European level, the sensitivity, wisdom and will of a great doctor, and on the other side the determination of a small, but important patient association.
What are these realities?
– The European Institute of Oncology in Milan.
– Dr. Nicola Fazio, Director of the Digestive and Neuroendocrine Tumours Programme.
– NET ITALY ETS Italian Association of Neuroendocrine Tumour Patients.
Dr. Fazio gathered some of the talented doctors from his staff with the aim to provide simple and comprehensible answers to the many patients invited by NET ITALY, who focused their questions on a particular topic afflicting many people with NET, i.e. carcinoid syndrome. Those who were not able to be at IEO premises could submit their questions online.
The result was almost three hours of high-level discussion during which patients could understand what this syndrome really is, and at the same time doctors could understand the feeling of fear and the doubts that patients are used to experiencing and that they can hardly express during the tight timeframe of a visit or a medical check-up.
That was the first Focus Group meeting, but it is not the last one: this format will be repeated in the future, each time dealing with a different specific topic involving NET. This is not a promise, it is a commitment.

Qualcosa di nuovo nell’aria ?
Cosa è successo lunedì 24 giugno allo IEO? Semplicemente è stato collaudato un modo diverso di fare comunicazione tra medico e paziente. Una comunicazione bidirezionale, senza barriere linguistiche né specialistiche, senza timori reverenziali, con l’unica necessità di capire ed essere capiti: eliminare ogni schermo tra il paziente e i suoi curanti è un buon modo per aumentare la consapevolezza della malattia.
Tutto così facile? Assolutamente no, tanti ingredienti sono stati indispensabili, prima di tutto una comunione di intenti tra diverse realtà: Una grande struttura oncologica a livello europeo, la sensibilità, la sapienza e la volontà di un grande Medico e la determinazione di una piccola, grande Associazione pazienti
Quali sono queste realtà:
- L’Istituto Europeo di Oncologia di Milano.
- Il Dr. Nicola Fazio, Direttore del Programma Tumori dell’apparato digerente e Neuroendocrini.
- NET ITALY ETS Associazione Italiana Pazienti di Tumore Neuroendocrini.
Il Dr. Fazio ha raccolto accanto a sé dei valenti medici pronti a dare risposte semplici e comprensibili ai tanti pazienti chiamati da NET ITALY a porre le loro domande su un argomento particolare che affligge tante persone con NET, la Sindrome da Carcinoide. Chi non ha potuto essere presente in persona ha comunque avuto la possibilità di inviare le domande online.
Il risultato è stato quasi tre ore di domande e risposte che hanno permesso alle persone presenti in collegamento e in sala, di capire cosa è realmente questa sindrome, ai medici il punto di vista, le paure, i dubbi che i pazienti vivono, e che raramente riescono a esprimere per soggezione e nei tempi stringenti di una visita o un controllo medico.
Quella di oggi è stata una prima volta, un primo Focus Group che si ripeterà in futuro trattando ogni volta un argomento specifico che coinvolge i Pazienti NET.
Non è una promessa, è un impegno preciso.
