Biography

Dr. Ito graduated from Kyushu University in 1984, later specializing in pancreatology mainly working at Kyushu National Cancer Center and Kyushu University. In 1993, he acquired a Ph.D. (Medical Science). In 1996 he started to work at NIH for three years, where Dr. Robert T Jensen was his director at Digestive Disease Branch, NIH in the USA for work on gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs). Since then, Dr. Ito and Dr. Jensen collaborate on lots of clinical and basic researches in the fields of NENs.

In 2000, Dr. Ito became a chief of Pancreatic Disease Branch at Kyushu University and became associate professor. He conducted the nationwide survey of neuroendocrine tumors for the first time in Japan. He is a director of Japanese Pancreatic Society (JPS) and Japanese Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (JNETS) as well. In 2017 Dr. Ito moved to Fukuoka Sanno Hospital and established the Neuroendocrine Tumor Centre. Now, Dr. Ito is a chairman of the 2nd revision of Japanese NENs clinical guideline. The 2nd guidelines were published in September 2019. Dr. Ito is elected chairman of the annual meeting of JNETS in 2021.

His research interests focus on neuroendocrine neoplasms, pancreatic tumors and pancreatitis.
